  Sparky's Home Fire Inspection Checklist

Sparky the Fire Dog does all he can to help everyone be fire safe by stopping fire before it starts, but he needs help. Use this checklist to find dangers in your home, then correct any dangers found.

Stoves - Heaters

Do you make sure clothes, curtains and furniture are kept away from stoves and heaters in your house?

If you have an oil stove or oil heater, is it kept level and clean, and does a regular stove inspector check for leaks and trouble at least once a year?

If you have a gas stove or gas heater, and you smell escaping gas, are you ready to call the fire department right away?

If you have a fireplace, do you keep a screen in front of the fire?

Electricity

Worn out electrical cords can start fires. Are all the electrical cords in your house in safe condition?

Have you checked around the house and removed cords that are under rugs or hanging over nails?

Check the fuse box. A 15-amp fuse is right for most lighting circuits. Are all the amps the right size? Never put too many plugs into a wall outlet. This can overload the circuit. Are there too many plugs in your wall outlets?

Smoking - Matches

Are matches and lighters kept out of the reach of all small children? Playing with matches is very dangerous.

Are plenty of ashtrays kept where people smoke in the house?

Are the ashes cold when they're put into the garbage? Remind people who smoke that they should not do so in bed?

Housekeeping

Have old papers, boxes, clothes, paint cans and other old things been cleaned out of your sheds, storage areas and from under the stairs?

Is the garbage taken out to the dumpster on a regular basis?

Has everyone been warned never to use gasoline or similar flammable liquids for cleaning clothes and other things? Are oily mops hung up and are oily rags kept in a tightly-closed metal can or thrown away after use?

General Fire Safety

If your home caught fire when you were asleep, do you know what to do? Be sure to ask your parents or guardians what you should do in case of fire. Does your family have fire escape drills so that you will know more than one way to get out of your house? Clothing can catch fire easily. Do you keep a safe distance from bonfires, heaters, stoves, fireplaces and anything else that is hot? If your clothes ever catch fire you must never run. Do you know how to smother a clothes fire by rolling on the ground or covering the fire with a blanket? When your parents cook at home do they turn the pot and pan handles in to keep small children from grabbing them and burning themselves? Have you ever visited the fire station to learn how the fire firefighters protect you and your home? In case of fire do you know how to call the fire department? Do you know the phone number and what to tell them? It's 979-4422. Tell the person who answers your name, phone number and house number.
